The Rebar industry often grapples with a subtle yet relevant confusion: the differentiation between a "support bar" and a "bar support." This short article is to unravel this mystery by discussing the difference between these two terms in the context of detailing. By examining details, you can see potential issues of misinterpreting these terms. This article serves as a guiding beacon for rebar detailers, ensuring they understand naming complexities of 'support bars' and 'bar supports' with precision and confidence.

Support Bar

Support bar refer to a specific type of reinforcing bar that is detailed and placed in a structure to provide support for main reinforcing. These bars are essential to maintaining the correct position of the rebar within the concrete formwork before and during the pouring of concrete. Support bars can be supported by Standees (Bar chairs) or prefabricated rebar accessories (plastic or metal). Moreover, they can be strategically located in response to structural requirements and engineering calculations, for example in heavy foundation mats.

NOTE: Support bars are not required due to the strength of the element and the stresses transferred. They are mounting bars used to ensure the appropriate location of the load-bearing bars. Therefore, to ensure their continuity, a 1-0 lap is enough.

Bar Support

Bar support generally refers to devices used to support reinforcing bars (rebar) in concrete during construction. There is no difference in purpose between 'support bar' and 'bar support'. They are essential to maintaining the correct position of the rebar within the concrete formwork before and during the pouring of concrete. Bar supports prevent the rebar from sagging or moving out of place due to the weight of the concrete. They help ensure that the reinforcing bars are correctly positioned, allowing the concrete to be poured around them evenly, providing adequate strength to the structure.

NOTE:

The term 'bar supports' or 'rebar supports' can be used interchangeably with the word 'accessories', because that's what they are. Beam and Slab Boolsters, Individual or Continuous High Chairs and many other rebar accessories are Bar Supports.

I hope you feel the difference now. However, always keep in mind that the person you are talking to may not know this small but important difference. Therefore, always pay attention to the context in which these terms are used.
